Kids’ rights a pushover for Irish police

In response to the attack by a Garda on a young Mayo fan at the Mayo v Kerry match I submitted this letter to the Irish Times. For obvious reasons it wasn’t published…

And here’s my perception:
Sir, – People watching the Kerry v Mayo match last Saturday will have witnessed much thuggery which doesn’t serve the game, fair play, entertainment or role modelling. But to see a Garda in uniform blatantly being a thug in charging at and physically assaulting a young fan is disturbing. This is aggravated by the fact the Garda was indifferent to the presence of TV cameras and tens of thousands of fans. One wonders what he does when not observed.

So when the previous Tanaiste made the populist claim same-sex marriage is the civil rights issue of our generation, how wrong he was; it’s our under eighteens whose rights are not asserted – conveniently so for people like that Garda. – Yours, etc,
